Thomas’ Design, Un Ring at Ingenuity Sculpture Festival

Thomas’ Design, Un Ring at Ingenuity Sculpture Festival

We are delighted to announce Thomas was awarded his first artist site for Mullum Sculpture Festival with his own design, entitled: Un Ring.

Thomas reputation for precision and finesse in his designs through to manufacturing processes set him apart. These fine skills were honed and ingrained during his training for his master craftsmen diplomas at Les Compagnons du Devoir, France.

The inaugural event ran concurrently with Mullum Music Festival and was an outstanding event in itself.

Thomas’ artist statement

The concept for this work came through researching circles. Circles appear in the earliest symbols and signs of our ancestors. Lots of cultures use circles to mean different things, but always it comes back to connection, unity. A Circle can also symbolise a doorway, or window, a view into another side of reality. In rituals, it often symbolises a rite of passage, and the circle holds great mystical significance.

I invite viewers to make their own interpretation about Un Ring’s meaning. They may even wish to create their own ritual when passing through Un Ring.

Winner of the $5,000 Acquisitional Prize: Jason Morning with “Germination” inspired by the local Davidson Plum
Winner of the People’s Choice Award: “Wish you were here” by John Walters

Woodfest 2018

Woodfest 2018

Woodfest, Federal Village – 15 April 2018

A nice change of scenery for us was attending the inaugural Woodfest held in picturesque village of Federal, just 20 minutes up the road from our workshop. Local native timbers of Silver Quandong, Silky Oak and Queensland Maple were the three main feature timbers celebrated at the festival. The festival’s agenda included: a showcase and design competition; discussion panels; demonstrations; and concluded with a local farm tour and milling demonstration.

We were invited to attend by organisers, Quality Timber Traders, to showcase some of Laurent’s furniture pieces at the festival. The showcase had to include one or more of the featured timbers in furniture or a unique design concept.

It was a fantastic day connecting with like-minded timber lovers who grow, admire, learn, teach and create pieces of fine timber furniture from local and sustainable sources.

With over 500 people attending the event (including press from Northern Star,The Echo and NBN News) we are sure next year’s event will become bigger and better.

A bustling crowd early in the day

Did you miss Woodfest?

Now celebrating it’s 10th anniversary, Maleny Wood Expo is a similar celebration of local timber for the Sunshine Coast area. In fact, it is now so large you can now attend for one to three days where you have a choice of fun wood-based workshops like boomerang making or wood carving.

It is held in the Sunshine Coast hinterland, from Saturday 5 to Monday 7 May 2018 (Qld long weekend). More info can be found here.

We’ll see you there in the crowd!
